Fostering For Success

Fostering Success is a 10-week workforce development initiative sponsored by the Department for Community Based Services that provides current and former foster youth the opportunity to participate in a paid internship, while receiving professional development and carerr planning support. The goal of the program is to provide participants an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to excel in the emerging workforce. Youth participants are between the ages of 18 to 23 with at least a high school diploma.

    Initiative includes:

    • 10-week paid internship subsidized by the Department for Community Based Services
    • Weekly one-on-one sessions with a professional Job Coach
    • Weekly professional development and career planning support
    • Financial literacy training and a match savings incentive
    • The opportunity to extend participation for up to 9 months

In the last four years, over 290 youth have participated in the program. DCBS is looking ot collaborate with more private and public sector employers to act as worksite providers for participants. Companies will have the opportunity to add valuable manpower to their workforce while assisting foster youth in developing marketable skills.

    Partners agree to:

    • Host a youth for a paid internship (wages subsidized by DCBS).
    • Provide 15-30 hours of meaningful work per week.
    • Provide on the job training from supervisors and co-workers at the workplace.
    • Partner with the program job coach to provide participants with constructive feedback.
    • Consider allowing high performing youth the opportunity to extend their assignment for up to 9 months.

The next program session will begin August 17, 2020. If you are interested in partnering with us as a Worksite Provider or would like additional information, please contact our Program Coordinator, Latasha Layne at (606)548-3541 or llmu224@uky.edu
